background

The spectacular future of digital media today lies not in centralised server-side service because google owns it all, but rather in powerful client-side application and real-world installation that blow the experience of OOH! to the next decade.

The ever-increasing pace of humanity makes new demands on the character of information presented. To distinguish in the myriad of information keeping the message clear and desirable is a question of good design and above all a question of good typography.

I’m studying Digital Media in Hyper Island Stockholm, specialicing in design. Within design my interest lies in typography and visual identity. I love to draw letters and other well balansed forms and compose those to beautiful entities with a skilled use of color. My other main interest is exploring the possibilites of programming for human interaction and creative expression. I program mainly visual applications in open source environments, such as Processing and OpenFrameworks.

Prior to Hyper Island I studied graphic design and communication back in Finland and did occasionaly some freelance webdesign. I have always had a passion for these things and I’m restlessly curious to deepen and broaden my knowldge.

interface design
school work
for ICA Banken

ICA Banken (a bank in sweden) contacted us on consultancy for digital strategy. Their aim was to attract young customers to select ICA Banken as their first bank.

We provided Skapa ditt eget bankkort (draw your own bank card) as a solution to their broblem. The service is an online application where you can draw a bank card and then share the design on facebook and order the card. I worked as an art director for Hanna Hollström and Emil Jönsson who were developing the Flash application.

I designed the interface for the application to fit with the upcoming light and calm redesign of ICA Banken. The icons are clear and the tools are easy to use without extra instructions.

Koos Monocase

typeface
for 53colors
print & motion material
and logotype

Koos Monocase is a full-caps font with contemporary sans-serif carachteristics. It is designed to be as personal and modern as possible without losing its clarity and usability. The typeface is optically monolined and it’s having a characteristic tension throughout all the glyphs. The typeface is used in the logotype, print and motion material for 53colors.com.

I am planning to make this a complete typeface family with a full character set and multiple weights and styles.

You can download the typeface here: koos_monocase.otf
The typeface is free to use in any projects.

crystalProjection

interactive projection
for 53colors
release event

It’s amazing how people react to interactive images. They can play with them for several hours before realizing what they’ve just been doing. This installation projects flying crystals that explode and respawn on human contact, as you can see on this demonstration video.

The installation was made to the 53colors.com site release party as a projection on the floor of the hallway leading to the main hall of Astoria in Stockholm.

This application is built in OpenFrameworks using the OpenCV library to process the video from a web cam and OpenGL to draw the 3D graphics.

I find that physical interaction with virtually enhanced environments has unlimited potential for building intuitive interfaces for digital media. crystalProjection is a proof of concept to make this kind of things with cheap off-the-shelf goods.

You can download the whole Code::Blocks project including the source code here: crystalProjection.rar
